Purpose: For family business board chairs to share experiences and explore high-performing board practices in a safe, confidential setting.

The FBCG chair peer group meets on a regular schedule and shares information and insights with each other between meetings. Along with chair learning and development, you will benefit from peer mentoring, relationship building with fellow chairs, and idea generation through a variety of topics
including:

  • Being an effective chair
  • Building a high-performing board
  • Board evaluation processes
  • What to do when performance declines
  • Preparing the NextGen for board roles
  • Creating agendas that keep the board focused and add value for the business and leadership
  • Family and independent qualifications
  • The board’s connection with ownership and the family
  • And many other topics that you bring to the table or emerge during meeting dialogue

Each peer group is comprised of 10 to 12 family business board chairs and FBCG facilitator Rob Sligh. Meetings generally start at 1 PM on day one and wrap-up by noon day two.

  • Peer groups meet three times per year on mutually agreed-upon dates
  • $9,200 annual membership fee. For in-person meetings, a reception and dinner are included (hotel and transportation are user-pay).
  • The in-person venue is decided by the group, often a hotel near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport unless otherwise agreed by the group.

Getting the most out of our time together

Because chairs are spread throughout the U.S and Canada, the in-person meeting schedule is a 24-hour format with the meeting starting at 1 PM, dinner together and a morning meeting the next day. This allows people the flexibility to fly or drive in the morning of day one and afternoon of day two. Just as important is the ongoing communication between meetings where a variety of experiences are brought to bear for members as situations arise.
