Successful enterprising families focus on planning for both the business and the family. Families that formalize family governance enjoy the benefits of educated, engaged family members and entrepreneurial energy that carries into future generations. Because family governance manifests uniquely based on the family’s culture and needs, family governance leaders often wonder which approaches best suit their situation and how to lead the family’s development and decision making efforts.

Family Governance Essentials is an interactive virtual experience that connects those who serve or will serve in family governance roles to advance their effectiveness as leaders within their families. Over two program days, participants will gain frameworks and tools to enhance their family’s governance processes and gain insight from the experiences of faculty and other participants.

Attendees will learn the ins-and-outs of common family governance structures including family meetings, councils and constitutions. They will also learn the key ingredients for success in their family governance efforts, including:

  • How family governance supports vision and continuity
  • Family governance process
  • Communication, engagement and trust-building
  • Family education & development
  • Integrating with the family enterprise system
  • Policies and decision making

Family Governance: A process for education and engagement of family members to support cohesive vision, values, and goals, and to prepare future generations for responsible participation as owners/beneficiaries and as carriers of the family’s legacy.

Program Dates and Times:

  • Friday, September 20, and Friday, September 27, 9 AM to 4 PM CT

Small group discussions cannot be recorded.

“I’m impressed that I was able to connect with so many others and to really gain insight and expertise as I move forward with a suitcase full of ideas and plans. You delivered everything you outlined and more! Excellent faculty and facilitators.”

  • Current or future members of family councils or similar committees,
  • Family members and leaders who are considering formalizing or evolving the way the family organizes and educates its members, including creating family councils, policies, assemblies, educational curriculums, family retreats, and more,
  • Those with formal roles in educating family members on matters of ownership and governance, including family office and family business employees with these kinds of roles,
  • Leaders preparing for generational transition who would like to understand how family governance supports success across generations,
  • This session would also be an appropriate part of a family business educational curriculum as an overview of family governance and leadership development opportunity
  • We welcome groups of up to six attendees per family, and ask each family member to register separately.
  • Please note that advisors to family businesses and independent directors may attend only with family members.
