Welcome and Opening Comments with Agape Redwood Rogers, FBCG Board Search Practice Lead

Session 1 – Effective Practices of High-Functioning Family Business Boards with David Karofsky

This session sets the stage by presenting best practices for board service and eliciting the current challenges faced by program participants.

Session 2 – Competencies of Family Directors with Stephanie Brun de Pontet

  • Identify the skills and behaviors that drive board effectiveness
  • Gain insight into the important perspective you bring to the board
  • Understand the process of preparation for the role 
  • Recognize your value as a bridge for board to family
  • Review role and unique importance of family directors

Topical Breakout Discussions

  • The group will be split into small breakout discussions led by an FBCG Consultant to discuss a topic of their choosing. Topics will be chosen live earlier in the day.

Keynote Speaker Remarks with Vesla Hoeschen

Vesla Hoeschen will share her journey as a fourth-generation family leader of Bemis Manufacturing Company, a global injection-molder headquartered in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. Currently in the fourth generation of leadership, Bemis has grown to be a leading producer of toilet seats, as well as a wide variety of consumer, commercial and medical products.

Velsa held a number of roles during her 30-year career with Bemis including founding and leading the family council, then serving as a family director on the board. In 2021, she was elected as board chairperson and is the first female chair in the company’s 122-year history. 

Session 3 – Developing Key Competencies as a Family Business Director with Stephanie Brun de Pontet

  • Please print a copy of the Director Development Worksheet in advance of the session
  • Review results of self-assessment
  • Recognize the imperative of continuous learning inherent in your role
  • Gain insight into knowledge gaps and develop personalized learning plan

Session 4 – Navigating Unique Tensions of Family Board Service with Stephanie Brun de Pontet

  • Learn how to navigate the unique tensions that family directors often experience.
  • Recognize that conflicts inherent in your board position vary by your external affiliations
  • Review common challenges faced by family directors and strategies for working through them
